Art And An Overall Sense Of Self

Everyone has a certain sense of self. This vital core of them they identify with. It usually involves some combination of the following: social and familial relationships, occupations, affiliations, strengths and weaknesses, attributes, spirituality, etc. Art, in its many forms, provides an outlet for many people to express that sense of self.

Types of Art that Allow People to Express Themselves

Art is a word that is used to describe many things. When it comes to self-expression, art can take on many forms, such as the following:

  • Music (singing, playing instruments, composing)
  • Drawing
  • Painting
  • Writing (books, poetry, plays, etc.)
  • Journaling
  • Building (models, buildings, reconstruction cars, etc.)
  • Playing
  • Dancing
  • Speaking (public speaking, lectures, Sunday school classes, preaching)
  • Sculpting
  • Filming
  • Photography
  • Acting

Each of these, and more, provide outlets for expression that allow people of all ages, shapes, sizes, and interests to pour themselves into their art while solidifying their senses of self. As toddlers, we dance, sing, and use crayons to color and draw. As we get older, we continue to use art in those ways or others through writing, painting, take photographs, or even in designing our own wardrobes and homes.

Artistic Expression and Self-Confidence

For some people the need to create visual art or perform is as natural as their needs to breathe. It provides an outlet for their emotions and an opportunity to relieve stress or blow off steam. It is also a positive outlet for the expression of great joy and elation. All emotions can be expressed through art in a way that allows you to process those emotions more easily.

While some would argue that art is in the eye of the beholder, the truth is that it lies in the heart and soul of the artist. Always remember, as you approach your own artistic outlets, to express your sense of self, that there are no rules about what is and isn’t art. It’s about expressing yourself – even if it doesn’t turn out quite the way you envisioned it.

One important aspect of successful is to ensure that four fundamental interests are fulfilled:

  • Social
  • Intellectual
  • Physical
  • Spiritual

This is accomplished through purposeful planning. Planning for opportunities to participate in artistic expression in order to find balance for your sense of self is as important as scheduling yearly physicals or eating healthy foods to make sure your physical health needs are met.
