Great Ways to Get Exercise Indoors

Posted on October 12, 2018 in Health and Wellness

Getting exercise is important throughout the year. In the cold of winter and on the hottest summer days, it can be a challenge for those who are accustomed to getting their fill of daily movement in the great outdoors. The good news is that there are many great ways to exercise indoors whenever the weather outdoors does not comply.

Indoor Walking Clubs

Indoor walking is especially popular among older adults as it provides safety, protection from the weather, and companionship while walking. Adults often strike up friendships with other walkers who often serve to encourage them to keep going when they might otherwise quit walking or slack in their efforts.

Mall walking is an especially popular option – one that’s available in many malls throughout the country. It allows you to walk on floors that are level and unobstructed, in a facility that is climate controlled, and one that has restroom facilities and water fountains. In most cases, walking clubs meet before the mall opens, but the course is laid out so that participants can often come and walk the route later in the day on their own.

YouTube Videos

YouTube is an excellent source for gentle exercises you can do at home. These exercises include things like Chair Yoga, Tai Chi, and other low impact workouts. Though if you’re more advanced and exercise routinely, you might consider looking for exercises for older adults that strengthen core muscles, help with balance, and improve flexibility.

Exercise Your Mind

The body isn’t the only thing that needs exercise in order to grow and expand. The mind needs exercise as well. Many adults exercise this critical organ with crossword puzzles, scrabble, Sudoku, and education.

Machines

Exercise machines, like the NuStep machine, allow users to engage in gentle, low impact aerobic exercises that help get the blood flowing throughout the body and the brain without feeling the pain associated with most aerobic exercises.

Restorative Therapy/Outpatient Therapy

Some people have specific restorative, rehabilitative, and therapeutic needs for exercises. These are often conducted in specific facilities with equipment and supervision designed to strengthen the body while restoring it.

Ohio Living Breckenridge Village believes spiritual, social, intellectual, and physical fulfillment are essential to successful living.
