Volunteering Your Way to Good Health

Posted on March 02, 2018 in Health and Wellness

Volunteering is great for your health, for both those who are helping out and the community in general. Helping out for the greater good can make you feel accomplished, foster new relationships and get your body moving. The benefits are endless!

When you volunteer, it’s common to leave with a heightened sense of:

●     Accomplishment

●     Positivity

●     Spiritual Purpose

And, of course, the people receiving help are given what they need to grow and feel at ease. It’s not only good for the mind, but, in many circumstances, the body as well.

Some common physical benefits of volunteering are:

●     Improvement and reversal of a brain in decline

●     Increase in longevity

●     Reduce risk of depression and stress

It can keep you busy when you are otherwise sedentary. It can boost your mood. You can lighten the mood around you with your helping heart.

So what can you do to get things rolling? There options are plentiful!

Volunteering options in a Retirement Community

Enjoy working in flower gardens? Join up with a Beautification Committee so you can work with the soil and plants. Plus, when flowers are blooming the outdoors look even more inviting, don’t you think?

Maybe you like to work with your hands, for creative or practical uses. Visit a woodshop (like the one on-site at Ohio Living Ohio Living Breckenridge Village) to put your hands to good use and give your labor to something or someone who needs it.

Would you rather craft with a purpose? Try out a recycled greeting cards program to do just that. The work comes in handy, and it’s a fun project to do with a friend or two.

Volunteer recognition

There’s nothing wrong with doing an act of kindness without recognition, and some would say they prefer it that way. But other times, it’s also nice to see that what you do is appreciated.

Ohio Living Breckenridge Village has an annual Volunteer Luncheon for all senior living residents who donate their time throughout the year towards various volunteering programs. Visit our website to see what kind of programs are offered and what on-site centers are available to those who live in this dynamic, faith-based community. Feel free to call us at 440-942-4342.
