Faith drives Ohio Living Swan Creek resident to crochet for a cause

Square-by-square, Ohio Living Swan Creek resident Sophie Sitek crochets to help those in need.

At 100-years-old, Sophie is the oldest volunteer at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center in Toledo.  She crochets squares that will eventually be sewn by other volunteers into larger blankets for patients at St. Vincent.

She was featured in this month's issue of the Mercy Health Messenger celebrating National Volunteer Month.

She says her faith has been the reason as to why she has been doing this for more than a decade in independent living.  "I've always tried to help others," she told the Messenger.  "It was how we were raised -- to help others as much as you can."

Sophie will turn 101 in May.
