Posted on August 03, 2017 in In The News
Each month, Ohio Living highlights an outstanding employee from our Culinary and Nutritional Services Department to recognize and showcase their talents, accomplishments and personal values.
This month's CNS Spotlight focuses on 30-year-old Steven Hayes, Executive Chef from Ohio Living Westminster-Thurber.
What has been your proudest career accomplishment within the last year?
My greatest accomplishment has to be becoming the Executive Chef. I’ve worked very hard my career so far to make it to this point. I’ve dreamed of this.
What’s the best career advice you’ve been given?
The best career advice that you can give anyone is to create goals and a time line. The biggest and most important part of that is to ensure that you accomplish each goal and to do it earlier than you previously predicted. I gave myself five years to become Executive Chef from a line cook and I did it in three years.
What’s been your most rewarding moment?
I have a lot of rewarding moments but the biggest is the moment that a resident asked me to make her deceased daughter's recipe for baked beans. She told me that they were just like hers and it reminded her of the good times they had.
What’s been your funniest on-the-job disaster?
The funniest disaster would have to be when I forgot about some butter that I was melting on the stove and the fire alarm went off. I turn around five minutes later and I have the fire department in my kitchen. So I felt really bad and I sent them all away with a cheeseburger.
