Miranda's Critters Return to OLWT!

Posted on November 23, 2018 in In The News

Miranda’s at it again with her famous polymer clay Critters! They line the hall of our connector art gallery. The photos don’t do her creations justice—these have to be some of the most detailed and complex pieces out there. It’s no wonder that Miranda has such a wide market base; she has sold her artwork to The Netherlands, Russia, France, The United Kingdom, Sweden, Germany, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Canada and all over the United States. More photos to come later!

Motherhood in the Deep

“Be Brave”

Believe in Yourself”

“Curiosity”

“Enjoy the Journey”

“Adventure Awaits”

Miranda Farrand, a happy mother of three, understands the adventure that awaits all parents. “I saw some photographs of a mom and a freshly born baby. I learned that the mother pushes the baby up to the top of the water so it can get its first breath of air until it learns how to do that itself. Parenthood inspires me.”

Death Walks His Dog

“We all know that death stops for no man…but any pet owner will tell you that you have to do what the dog says when the dog says to do something. And this dog wants to go for a walk. An evening stroll as the sun goes down.”

One Bad Apple

“My biggest inspiration comes from my kids. So the ideas I get for my things mostly come from my kids or their artwork or the things that they say, some of which are pretty off the wall. This one is based on a drawing my son did on the back of his homework when he was much younger.”

Apologies for the poor quality photo. This one was hard to photograph without things reflecting in the glass.

Pumpkin Patch

The fields of imagination were overabundant with bountiful crops this year. This frame sprouted a heaping harvest of gourds and pumpkins. They may be a tad over-ripe since they have all morphed into creatures with eyes and teeth. Buyer-beware when wading through looking for the perfect specimen.

Candy Corn Craze

Ever wonder what happens to the nastiest of Halloween candies? I know, I know, some people love the pure blob of sugar represented by the candy corn. But, quite frankly, I find them nauseating. However, I am rather fond of them when they go astray and turn into these delightful little critters with teeth and eyes…and occasionally a brain or two.

Miranda's Story:

When I’m not running the Business Office at Ohio Living Westminster-Thurber, I’m a maker of quirky and unusual critters predominately formed from polymer clay. I like to make things that make me smile. Sometimes they make me frown. That’s okay too. I was told by a psychic once that I was weird. I think she was right; I do live in my own little world that I surface from time to time to interact with those around me. Making things is my own self-imposed therapy when I need to decompress.

I grew up in the Ozark Mountains of Missouri, running the hills on our farm. It was a constant source of inspiration. I drew and painted ceramics as I grew up. It wasn’t until moving to Ohio as an adult that I branched out into quilting, photography and later, sculpting. Polymer clay is a fairly affordable, versatile material that can be cured in your home oven. As a busy wife and mother of three (four if you count the fur baby, and I do), this appealed to me greatly. Over the last few years I’ve had tutorials featured in Crafts N Things Magazine as well as on the websites of Michael’s stores and Sculpey.com. I have also been a member of the Sculpey Design Squad by Polyform Products—the maker of the polymer clay brand that I utilize. I am a member of both the Columbus and Dayton Polymer Clay Guilds.

My beloved hubby transformed our former nursery into my art studio/craft room, because for several years, the dining room table was covered in all of my crafting supplies and works in progress. My husband decided he would like to eat there instead so that prompted the room conversion.   : )

I love sculpting animals as well as my style of polymer clay “paintings.” I like seeing what I can come up with critter-wise. Random ideas usually pop into my head at the perfect times…like when I am lying in bed at night trying to go to sleep, sitting in a meeting at work, driving down the freeway, etc. You know, all the times that you can’t do anything with the creativity cooped up inside! Sometimes, I’ll see a fun photo, coloring book page, a drawing by one of my kids or my own doodle that will inspire a critter. Oftentimes, I have no idea what I am going to make until I sit down and stare at my clay for a little while.  I’m pretty flexible…If I have one idea in mind and my hands start making something else, I usually just go with it.

Miranda rarely does custom orders. But you may check out her work on Facebook (facebook.com/mirandascritters) and on Etsy (mirandascritters.etsy.com).
