OWLS School: The American Musical | October 3 & 10
Posted on August 07, 2017 in In The News
For over a century, the American Musicals have played a significant part of popular music and culture in the United States, whether influencing various styles and genres of music or taking a social or political platform. This course, entitled “The American Popular Musicals and Their Effect On Pop Culture,” highlights the great American composers such as George and Ira Gershwin, Richard Rodgers, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and many others.
Many songs originally featured in musical theatre have become what we call today “standards,” and have their place in the "Great American Songbook,” meaning that the “show-tunes” of yesterday are now classics. Dave Powers provides a historical perspective featuring classic recorded works and live performances.
