February 2024 Employee Spotlight: Sam M., Unit Manager

Posted on February 15, 2024 in

It takes a special person to do all the things that health care workers do, and Sam M., a unit manager for the Ohio Living Mount Pleasant skilled nursing facility, embodies this truth. For nearly 13 years, she’s extended extraordinary care and built meaningful relationships with her residents and staff, who she says are like family.

Sam’s first role with Ohio Living Mount Pleasant started in 2011, when she accepted an STNA position while attending nursing school. She was promoted to floor nurse later that year and since, has worked her way up to become a unit manager.

“Primarily, I help to manage the staff and oversee our long-term care residents’ day-to day-care,” explained Sam. “In the skilled nursing unit, we take care of residents from the Ohio Living Mount Pleasant community and surrounding area who need rehab before returning to their homes. Along with my co-manager Tamara, we help to set up home health and hospice services for residents when needed, along with any other services someone may need upon discharge.”

Sam notes that the most rewarding part of her job is the relationships she has made with residents and their families.

“I have taken care most of my patients for many years, and they are like my family,” said Sam. “I always look out for their best interests. Also, the relationships I have made with my staff over the years are very rewarding. They know that my door is always open, and that they can be honest to communicate any challenges or issues. I have been very lucky and blessed to have the coworkers and managers that I do, working with me to take care of our residents.”

Outside of work, Sam is happily married, and she has two children, 10-year-old Teagan and five-year-old Kohen. (Two fun-loving cats named Snowflake and Oreo complete their family unit!) The family greatly enjoys traveling and spending quality time with one another at destinations like Gatlinburg and the beach.

Sam adds, “This job can break you down mentally and physically, but it can also be very rewarding. Some of the worst and best days of my life have been in this building. I know it is said a lot, but it really does take a special person to do the things health care workers do. I was lucky that straight out of school, I found a facility that I loved, and a great group of coworkers that care about the residents just as much as I do.”
