February 2024 Resident Spotlight: Betty Elworth

Posted on February 16, 2024 in In The News

After 37 years of teaching, a well-deserved season of retirement brought Betty Elworth and her husband Don to Ohio Living Mount Pleasant. Betty was born in the southwest corner of Kentucky during the Great Depression and seven years later, her father accepted a job in Texas resulting in her living and studying there through her college years.

“As a young child, I read a book about the little mountain girl named Heidi. The book so impressed me that it led me to the foothills of the Rocky Mountains to teach English, history and geography,” shared Betty. “I loved it. Next, marriage brought me to Middletown, Ohio, where I taught English at Middletown High School for the next several years. I enjoyed working with the teenagers and other educators, however, I was ready to retire after 37 years of teaching.”

Upon retiring, Betty and Don and traveled for several years, taking more than twenty Elderhostel classes in the United States, Canada and Europe. When the couple started to do research into retirement communities, they were drawn to Ohio Living Mount Pleasant.

“We have lived here for five years now, feeling fortunate the whole time,” recounted Betty. “People are friendly and ready to smile and wave; the social director provides many opportunities for all sorts of social activities on and off campus, Miami University Learning in Retirement offers classes on campus twice a year. In fact, Don and I have taught five classes through Learning in Retirement since we've lived here - he does the computer work, and I do the research and talking. We even have a library at the edge of the campus! Ohio Living Mount Pleasant provides many opportunities for learning, dining, physical health, and social interactions at the doorstep of all residents.”

Without any doubts, Betty says she would heartily recommend Ohio Living Mount Pleasant to others when they retire. “Ohio Living Mount Pleasant works hard to make everyone feel protected and comfortable, and both Don and I feel safe here,” she elaborated. “Everyone has alarm systems in the homes and necklaces or bracelets to wear at all times. The staff also works hard to see that our needs are met and that we are comfortable, making our lives as easy as possible.”
